Now that swimming season is here again, we have a few swimming pool tips and tricks to help you enjoy your pool all season long.
Tennis Balls – Float a tennis ball in your swimming pool to soak up oils and lotions from the surface of your pool water. Oils and lotions leave a sheen/film on the water surface that clings to skin, hair, and swimwear. Keeping a tennis ball floating in your swimming pool will help absorb the oils and sheen from the water surface and prevent it from coating everything that comes out of the pool water.
Baking Soda – Pool supply stores sell products with sodium bicarbonate to increase the alkalinity of pool water, but did you know that sodium bicarbonate is an ingredient in household baking soda? If you find it surprising that baking soda is a substitute for increasing the alkalinity in pool water, you may also be surprised to find out that some pool supply stores sell baking soda cheaper than at a grocery store. It’s worth checking out your local pool store to compare prices. Note, baking soda will cloud pool water when used in excess, so it is best to only make minor alkalinity increases with it.
Bucket – At the start of a day, fill a bucket with water and place it on the steps or slope leading into the pool so that a portion of the bucket is outside of the water. Mark the side of the bucket at the water line. At the end of the day, check and mark the bucket again at the water line. Measure the distance between the two lines to determine how much water was evaporated or lost during the day. Typically, pool water will evaporate about 1/4 ” in a day. In Las Vegas/Southern Nevada, low humidity, bright sun, high temperatures, and the wind blowing across the water surface accelerates water evaporation so that the number could be slightly higher. If you notice a drop over 1″ in a day, repeat the measuring process several more days to verify if the pool is consistently losing that much water. Consistent drops in water level that are over the average can be an indication of a water leak in the pool or filtration/pump system.
**Note – If you have an automatic water leveler for your pool, turn the water off on your test day to ensure accurate measurement.
Solar Pool Cover – Using a solar pool cover(looks like bubble-wrap) on your pool serves three primary functions. The first function is to get and keep your pool temperature warm and comfortable without needing to run a pool water heater. The second function of a pool cover is to keep debris out of your pool which reduces the need to clean and chemically treat your pool water. The third, and in Southern Nevada most importantly, a pool cover will significantly reduce water evaporation. Wind motion over water surfaces accelerates evaporation. Keep a pool cover on when the swimming pool is not in use will not only make your pool water warm and comfortable but will also keep it cleaner and reduce water loss due to evaporation. In a dry area like Southern Nevada, water will evaporate much faster than other parts of the country.
