Swimming Pool’s through History

Swimming pools and watering holes have been a part of our history dating all the back to 2600 BC. The first society to create more elaborate Swimming Pools was the ancient Mohenjodaro in Pakistan. They created the Great Baths of Mohenjodaro that featured terraced decks that nearly match our modern variations that exist today.

Our journey through pool history takes us to our next great water Swimming Pool innovators that can be found in ancient Rome and Greece. Swimming was a big part of their culture, being taught as soon as boys were old enough to attend elementary school. This passion for swimming pools led to incredible innovations, including the first heated swimming pool created by Gaius Maecenas in Rome.

Swimming pools certainly improved as humanity grew and expanded, however, the did not become popular until the 19th century. The Olympic Games swimming races were among the athletic events that helped increase the popularity of swimming pools.

America did not have a single swimming pool until 1868 when the Cabot Street bath in Boston was built. It was built to serve a neighborhood that was built with very few baths. This swimming pool helped spark America’s interest in swimming pools and would become the ember that lit the flames of innovation.

As we enter the 20th century modern technology helped create incredible developments that would rocket swimming pools to a new level. Developments that include filtration and chlorination systems that would ensure pool water kept clean and hygienic. Before these Swimming Pool innovations, the only way to clean pool water was to completely drain and refill the entire pool.
