Now that temperatures are starting to climb over 90 degrees in Las Vegas, it is a great time to get your swimming pool ready for summer. Thankfully, Southern Nevada has a milder winter season than much of the country. That means many swimming pools are not ‘closed’ the same way as the ones in colder climates and so it takes less work to re-open our swimming pools. Even so, there are essential steps to take when opening your swimming pool for the season. Not performing the proper maintenance at the beginning of the swimming season can be costly, so let us now talk about some of the things needed for proper pool operation.

Water Levels

Check the water level and fill the swimming pool to its average operating level. Before getting started on pool maintenance, always check the water level to ensure that it is filled up to its average operating level. When pool water levels fall near or below the filter intake, water intake may not keep up with the filter system causing air pockets in the filtration system. Air pockets will reduce the effectiveness of the water and filtration system, and dry pumping can cause pumps to overheat, especially when outside temperatures rise above 100 degrees.

Cleaning Debris

Clean up the debris both outside and inside the swimming pool. Winter in Southern Nevada is milder than much of the country; however, winter winds and weather will cause a buildup of dust and debris in and around your swimming pool. Keeping your pool area swept and clean will reduce the need for cleaning every time the winds pick up and reduce the chemicals needed to keep the water balanced and fresh. Having a clean pool area and swimming pool will also help during the inspection process.

Inspect for Damage

Inspect your pool for any leaks or damage. Now that your water level is correct and the debris cleaned up, it’s time to inspect the various parts of your swimming pool and filtration system for wear and tear. Check the swimming pool and deck for signs of cracking, chipping, or broken pieces. Inspect the visible plumbing for signs of leaks, cracks, or breaks. Remove, clean, and check each filter to make sure they are in good shape for the swimming season. Getting your pool ready includes checking the water manifold inside the filter tank where the filters sit/attach and make sure that there are no cracks or breaks. Cracks or broken areas in the water manifold will allow dirty water to bypass the filters and suck contaminated water back into your swimming pool.

Review Pool Water Chemistry

After filling the water lever, cleaning the debris, and checking the pool and filtration system for problems, it is time to review the pool water chemistry with a pool water test kit. Alternatively, you can bring a sample of your pool water to most pool stores and have it checked on site. Most pool stores will make recommendations based on how water tests.

This list details proper water chemistry levels for optimal swimming pool functionality and swimmers comfort:

pH: 7.4 – 7.6
Chlorine: 1.0 – 3.0 ppm
Total Alkalinity: 80 – 140 ppm
Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400
Cyanuric Acid: 25 – 50 ppm
Total Dissolved Solids: 500 – 5000 ppm

There are products which will help keep your pool water chemistry in the balance depending on how your pool water tests. One essential item on that list is the Total Dissolved Solids number. Water molecules absorb contaminants over time, which require more and more chemicals to stay clean and balanced. When the Dissolved Solids measure over 5000 parts per million, Chlorine and other chemicals are not as effective at keeping the water balance safe and comfortable. Over time, dissolved solids will render Chlorine and other chemicals useless, and it will be a struggle to keep algae away and pool water clear.

Traditionally, the only way to bring the Total Dissolved Solids number down to a reasonable level was to drain 3/4 of the water from the swimming pool and then refill. Clarity Pool Service in Las Vegas offers PuriPool reverse-osmosis pool water filtration service, which filters existing pool water to remove dissolved solids and hard water minerals commonly found in Southern Nevada water. PuriPool water treatment not only saves the time and cost of draining and refilling your swimming pool but also keeps maintenance costs down due to fewer minerals and contaminants in the pool water. Cleaner pool water means fewer chemicals and cleaning to stay balanced and safe.
