Deciding to add a pool to your backyard can be a wonderful experience. It is always a good idea to start planning your custom swimming pool before you start. Having a vision of what style of pool you want to be built can help you avoid any surprises during construction. That’s where Clarity Pool Service of Las Vegas is here to help!

We’ll be writing a new article every week until Summer starts, and every week we will cover some of the most popular swimming pool features you can incorporate into your custom pool build. This week we’ll be going in-depth into the “Spillway Swimming Pool Feature.”

The Spillway

The spillway is a classic swimming pool feature that allows one water body to spill or cascade into another. Some examples of spillways you may have seen are the features that enable spas to spill into the main pool area. Sometimes the simple features are the best ones! Not only does this create a calming visual effect, but the sound is truly blissful.

The Stacked Spillway

The Stacked Spillway design allows the water to cascade down a stair-like design. It’s easiest to imagine water spilling down a flight of stairs; these stairs tend to be much smaller in size compared to regular size stairs, though. The best part is you get to select the stone material for the Stacked Spillway.

Negative Edge Spillway

One of the best spillways, in my opinion, is the Negative Edge Spillway. With this feature, you utilize the environment and the surrounding area of the property in most cases. It works best when the pool gets constructed on a slope. The higher the pool is built on the hill, the better the effect. The whole idea is to make the spillway look as if it’s spilling into infinity. That’s the other name to describe this spillway too, which is the Infinity Edge Pool Feature. The photo we’ve included will give you a better idea of just one of the ways this ultra-modern pool feature gets utilized. The Negative Edge Spillway doesn’t necessarily have to use environmental height, either. Some designers use this design to create a mirror-like effect that is breathtaking. When you combine the Negative Edge Spillway with beautiful lighting, this feature is comparable to a work of art, rather than just a swimming pool feature.

So, if you’ve ever heard of the infinity swimming pool design, you’ll get the gist of the Infinity spa design feature. The infinity swimming pool feature works best when another body of water sits below it. The body of water allows the mind to imagine that the water is ultimately flowing into it. It’s not always necessary to have a large body underneath the infinity edge, but it sure does add to the effect. The Negative Edge Spa Spillway utilizes the swimming pool as its body of water. It can look spectacular when done correctly.

Reflection Spillway

We briefly touched on the swimming pool feature above. Considered a Negative Edge design, and it is pretty amazing when done correctly. It’s comparable to a mirror when the water is undisturbed. This design allows water to overflow on all sides, which gives it its mirror-like reflective quality.

What Will Your Custom Swimming Pool Lighting Say About You?

Custom pool lighting is an essential part of swimming pool design for apparent reasons, the first being to allow for visibility at night. The second, not so apparent reason to light your pool is for aesthetics. aesthetic pool lighting is like the toppings on ice cream. The ice cream is amazing all by itself, but when you add your favorite toppings, it has a way of adding visual complexity to the pool designer’s artistic vision. While standard pool lighting is necessary, aesthetic pool lighting is going to lend toward the creative artistic vision—the experienced custom pool designer combines both these lighting disciplines. The objective is to create a well-lit and safe, yet attractive lighting schema for your custom-designed swimming pool.

Dramatic, Awe-Inspiring, Romantic, Warm & Cozy, and Energetic

When designing and building a custom swimming pool, we have a plethora of modern “tricks of the trade” that can transform your custom pool design into a focal point that elicits real human emotion. From the shape or architecture of the swimming pool and the surrounding environment to the pool lighting. The proper use of lighting is an essential tool within our metaphorical palette (or in this process). So, if you want to create a piece of art that you can swim in, Clarity Pool Service is your custom pool designer!

There’s Only One Real-Efficient Option, the Standard LED!

You have a choice among roughly three main lighting types where it concerns your custom swimming pool design and the lighting schema we implement. We said you have a choice, but it’s always reasonable to listen to the professional pool designers’ recommendations; more often than not, they recommend a particular option for a valid reason. The three types of lighting are as follows. As a quick notation to the following break-down of lighting types, we want to say that LED lighting is by far the preferred choice of custom pool designers. Not only are they energy-efficient, but they also have a plethora of colors and form factors options. Below, we’ve included Incandescent and Halogen for comparison reasons or even a history of pool lighting types.

Incandescent

At one point within our history, incandescent lighting was the least expensive option for an inground swimming pool. The incandescent lighting is comparable to the light bulbs used in the old standard light bulb used in homes. Then the introduction of the CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light). The incandescent light source produces a warm, almost golden glow by heating a Tungsten filament (usually Tungsten.) In all actuality, this method produces more heat than actual light. Which makes the use of incandescent lighting all but obsolete.

Halogen

Halogen lighting was all the rage (like LED’s are now) in the past, and they took the place of incandescent lighting. The reason it took the place of incandescent lighting is due to it using 20% less energy as well as it lasts far longer than it’s predecessor. Like most technologies, there’s often a trade-off for optimizing energy consumption. The halogen light still uses filament technology similar to incandescent. The other drawback to #Halogen is that when it’s filament heated, it casts a visible yellow hue. Halogen lighting also contains Halogen gas, which causes it to heat up to higher temperatures. The final downside is that Halogen lighting costs were nearly double that of the Incandescent light, and they still have a remarkably short lifespan.

LED Lighting (the Modern Standard)

The modern standard in all-around general lighting as well as #CustomPoolLighting. The LED light is far brighter, more energy-efficient, and comes in a plethora of beautiful colors. The arrival of LED lighting within the custom pool scene brought the pool designer’s artistic potential to all-new levels (until the next technology gets invented.) While the Incandescent and Halogen used to have a place in swimming pool design, but modern swimming pool design does not. The LED is the standard in modern pool construction. LED’s do not produce excessive amounts of heat, they cast a brighter light, and you don’t have to deal with a yellowish hue in all your lights. The invention of LED lighting was a revolutionary moment in time, especially within creative lighting applications such as custom swimming pool design.

When it comes to perfect contrast, there’s nothing like a dark grey slate accent wall to give your pool some modern flair. Some homeowners add walls to their custom swimming pool designs, even when they functionally don’t need them to retain anything—purely aesthetic appeal walls. You’ll find plenty of examples online of homeowners using walls to do some pretty appealing stuff. More often than not, a homeowner won’t just opt to include a retaining wall to improve overall aesthetic appeal. The custom swimming pool designer usually has a design concept that requires an elevated top-level or tier. The higher ground allows many designers to install waterfalls, water walls, scuppers or spouts, sheer descents, and other design options.

The Retention Wall Overview – What is a Retaining Wall

A retaining wall is what its name implies, a wall specially designed to hold back earth and natural rock. Most backyards and outdoor areas where we build in-ground swimming pools are not level (flat). Southern, Nevada land is pretty flat, to begin with, so retaining walls aren’t usually required. As mentioned above, they are, however, pretty common and called for through the pool design. They often get added for specific water or level feature.

Here are some common topics about retention walls for custom swimming pools.

  • Retaining walls get implemented to hold earth (dirt or rock) in place.
  • Some land here in Las Vegas isn’t level, and some have substantial slopes or uneven surfaces that the pool builder has to contend with, and the retaining wall is just one of the tools in our arsenal.

  • The size and areas you’ll need a retaining wall for are dependent on how much earth you need to hold back. An engineer designs the retaining wall plans, and then Clarity Pool Service realizes those plans through construction.
  • Common retaining wall materials are poured-in-place Concrete, cinder blocks, concrete blocks (or reinforced cinder blocks with wet Concrete poured into cavities).
Dry stacked concrete blocks – using the dry concrete blocks to build a segmented wall. The solid dry concrete blocks are designed to lock together. It’s relatively easy to determine the difference between a segmented wall (which uses solid concrete blocks in a staggered pattern), opposed to a reinforced cinderblock wall, or poured in place concrete wall. Cinder block walls are often back-poured with wet Concrete. The cinder blocks are reinforced with steel rebar.
  • You can install stacked stone on the retention wall’s surface as an aesthetic option, or any other material that is appropriate and adheres onto the wall.
Don’t look at a retaining wall as an eyesore. A wall is used in ways that will not only compliment your yard but open up additional options where function and visuals features are concerned.
How the retaining wall gets constructed is determined by the Engineer, and quite possibly the swimming pool contractor.
  • Poured Concrete Walls are arguably more reliable than a Cinder Block wall design. Poured concrete walls have better lateral strength when compared to back-poured cinderblock walls. The stronger the wall, the more pressure it can withstand. A poured wall doesn’t have joints like a block wall, making it the preferred choice of pool contractors.
  • How much does that retention wall cost? Your cost is dependent on the size and scope of the wall. Basically, how tall (depends on how much earth needs gets retained) and the length or span of the wall impacts the overall cost of building a wall. That’s not including any features or decorative materials you want to use to finish the wall.
  • Retaining wall costs can typically range from $7K – $20K (costs associated with the wall are dependent on the choices you make with our Clarity Pool Service design consultant and the Engineer hired to plan & design the retaining wall.)
